Pace of Play

Our Three Flag System

It is important to understand what is an appropriate pace of play, and not to generalize or suggest that a standard round at every club equate to 4 hours. We follow an objective to rate by time, how long it should take a foursome to play each hole at the respective club. By rating each hole, we can formulate an appropriate pace of play for the front and back nine (the pace of play for a front nine and back nine often differ). The resulting pace of play for eighteen holes will often exceed four hours. More consistent course playing times can be achieved with a greater pace of play awareness. The Starter and Play Coordinators facilitate this awareness.

Staying position on the course will positively affect the course pace of play. ClubLink has adopted a three flag system (green, yellow and red) called "Let us bring you up to speed." The flag system is used to identify a group’s position on the course relative to the group ahead. In cases where the group in front is not relevant (may be the lead group of the day), the colour of flag will indicate the group's position on the course relative to the start time and expected Pace of Play.

The Play Coordinator will monitor each group's position based on the following criteria. A green flag will be displayed when a group is in good position. If a group is out of position, the Play Coordinator will present the group with a yellow flag. This flag signifies that the group must pick up its pace to re-establish good position. In the event the group falls severely behind, the Play Coordinator will approach the group bearing a red flag. It is the Play Coordinator's responsibility to suggest the best possible resolution and may suggest allowing groups to play through or to pick-up and move ahead to re-establish good position.

Please refer to the Time Pace Chart for an example of how pace of play can be affected by time allowed to complete holes.

Rain Check Policies

For all forms of guest fees or reciprocal fees paid other than for Corporate Events, the following structure applies for granting of Rain Checks regardless of weather conditions at the start of play:

  • In the event a person does not complete 9 holes due to inclement weather, an 18 hole Rain Check shall be granted
  • In the event a person does complete 9 holes but not more than 14 holes, a 9 hole Rain Check shall be granted
  • In the event a person plays 15 holes or more but less than 18 holes, no Rain Checks shall be granted
